DIY Gold Tip Feather Garland

Happy Monday friends! I hope you had a great weekend!

My Tarheels got crushed but there was some great football on wasn’t there?!

It’s that time again for another edition of Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours and I can’t wait to share ours on Thursday! In the meantime I thought I would share my DIY feather garland and give you a little sneak peek of what’s to come!

DIY Feather Garland2

As you know I don’t have much of a decorating budget for fall so I ordered some inexpensive feathers from Ebay. I think I paid less than $4 total!

If you’re new here you’ll soon know how much I love garland of any kind so I had to make one out of the feathers. I wanted it to be simple without having to buy any additional supplies so I just used some string I had on hand, my trusty glue gun and gold spray paint.

I put a dab of hot glue on the tip of each feather and stuck them to the string, each one about 3 inches apart. This part was a little tricky because I had to get the string on the feather without burning my fingers (okay, I burned my fingers a little but I’m used to it by now!). I started out by holding the feather in one hand and putting the glue on it then trying to put the string into the glue while still holding it.

I was able to get them all to stick but next time I think I’ll try putting a dab of glue on the tip of a feather, laying the feather down glue side up and then placing the string on the glue. I would suggest using a surface that you don’t mind getting glue on unlike my kitchen countertops :)

Be careful not to touch the glue until it has cooled. Once it was cool enough for me to touch I pushed the string down into the glue to make sure it was secure.

This part is just trial and error so you can figure out what works best for you and if you happen to have two sets of hands that’s even better :) It didn’t take much glue for them to stick and they’ve held up well even when the fan is blowing them in the living room!

Once the feathers were glued I spray painted the tips of the white feathers gold. I used a piece of thick paper (a Piperlime ad to be exact) to mark where I wanted the gold to stop and gave it a quick spray.

When everything was dry I attached it to my mantel with gold thumb tacks.

So what do you guys think? This really is so easy and you could use anything if you don’t have feathers…acorns, leaves, pinecones, twigs, etc.

I hope you’ll come back to see the rest of our fall tour on Thursday! You can begin the tours this morning with our lovely host, Lindsay, of The White Buffalo Styling Co.!
