DIY Nautical Spool Side Table

I picked up this electrical wire spool from my parents’ new home construction site and knew that I could turn it into something fun! I immediately thought it would be great as a side table for our deck so I got to work.

First, the bolts were a little loose so I tightened them with a wrench then gave it a quick sanding with my electric sander.

I painted it with leftover outdoor paint that I used on my front door makeover. The color is Benjamin Moore’s Spirit In The Sky. You can read all about the door makeover here. I also painted my back door the same color so the table should go well on the deck.

Of course I had a helper :)

Once the paint was dry I lightly sanded it again to give it a distressed look. Then I rubbed some Danish Oil in Dark Walnut that I had in my garage on top of the paint and wiped off the excess with a rag. I love to use Danish Oil on painted furniture when I want to tone down the color and achieve a more weathered look.

Next I wrapped some rope around the middle section of the spool and glued it with my hot glue gun as I went. I also glued rope around the edge of the table top and the base. The rope was leftover from Christmas when I used it to wrap around our Christmas tree as garland.

Once this was done I realized that the table was too short and it didn’t sit flat because of the bolts so I decided to add castors to the bottom. I wasn’t sure the best way to attach them at first but I had some scrap wood on hand so I cut it into the lengths I needed and used Liquid Nail to glue the pieces in place for stability.

I waited a bit for the glue to dry then I used 1 1/4″ wood screws to attach the four castors. The castors were the only materials I purchased and they were less than $3 each from Home Depot so I have under $12 in the project altogether.

There are bolts on top of the table that hold the spool together and also a couple of holes that I wasn’t sure what to do with but in the end they don’t bother me. I think they give the table character and I can style it with something like a dish on top if I need to cover the bolts and holes. I might end up playing around with the tabletop a little more later on but this is how it will stay for now.

    1. Hi Kim! I actually happened upon mine randomly but I travel through the country quite a bit. I usually find free pallets on Craigslist so maybe stools would be there too! Good luck!

      1. How does the cardboard hold up with the moisture and in the rain. We have one with the cardboard. We want to put in on our front porch. But wanted to make sure it will hold up in the rain.

  2. Yay! I love that not only are we going to get to connect at Haven this summer, but we have a shared love of all things nautical! (I knew I liked you when we first “met” on Instagram.) ;-) This spool table is the bee’s knees! Pinning time.

  3. I love this! I like repurposing stuff. James’ friends made a bar out of a huge spool in college, and they mounted tubes on the bottom level to hold bottles. That’s an entirely different idea!
