My Hair Story & 5 Steps To Healthier Hair

As women, I think our hair defines us in a way. It tells a story, some are happy stories and some sad. Our hairstyles can take us down memory lane the second we see a picture of an old hairstyle we had or ones we coveted from girls we knew.

I love my hair now but that hasn’t always been the case. It took me 37 years to figure out how to take care of it and to find a style and routine that is right for me.

My hair and scalp are naturally dry so I’m always looking for great products and tips for keeping the dryness and damage under control. I was recently in Target and purchased the new Dove Regenerative Nourishment Collection and I love how it’s transforming my hair back to feeling healthy and shiny!

The collection consists of a shampoo, conditioner and serum-in-oil that I’m addicted to now. My hair feels better than ever after using the shampoo and conditioner and I swear it smells just like roses! I use the oil on the ends of my damp hair before I blow dry it and it makes it look and feel silky.

My hair has come a long way over the years and although I’m not proud of every style I do pride myself on being somewhat of a hair ‘risk taker’! I’ve never gone purple or anything but it’s been all different lengths and almost every color in between.  Shall we take a walk?

I do apologize about all of the sad 90’s fashion so let’s just all pretend you didn’t see my clothes, mmkay?!?!

Like anything in life, the changes and choices I’ve made have shaped who I am today. Changing my hairstyle allowed me to express myself and it also satisfied my need for change. Looking back on the journey is a great way to see how far I’ve come and to celebrate and remember every cut, color and style.

Unfortunately Jennifer Aniston was the only one who could pull of that ‘Friends’ haircut. At least I gave it a shot, right?

Are you having flashbacks to 1990???

My hair has taken a beating over the years from the color (and the color correcting) to the sun and styling. Dove Hair is helping me repair the damage so I can enjoy my very best hair. No more using my son’s 3-in-1 shampoo, conditioner and body wash, lol!

I experimented a lot along my hair journey and I figured out what length and style works best for me. I’ve also figured out how to cut and color my hair myself which saves me hundreds of dollars a year! Now that I’ve found Dove Hair products and a haircare routine that I’m happy about I don’t have to stress about my past hair damage.

These are my top 5 tips for healthier hair that YOU can be happy with:

  1. Go as many days between washing as possible. I only wash my hair twice a week! I know not everyone can do this but I bet you can go more days than you think. Grab a bottle of dry shampoo and give it a go!
  2. Only blow dry when necessary. Washing your hair less will obviously also lessen how often you blow dry so these go hand in hand. When you do blow dry your hair use your fingers to comb through while drying it instead of a brush. Dry it upside down to add more volume.
  3. Use less product. Outside of shampoo, conditioner and oil serum I only use a spritz of hairspray after I curl it.
  4. Lose the brush! I only brush my hair in the mornings. I might comb over the top layer of my hair if I’m going out in the evening but other than that, no brushing.
  5. Implement a healthy haircare routine. Use a handful of great products like the Dove Hair Regenerative Nourishment line and get into a good washing and drying schedule.

A few more tips and tricks:

I’m all about schedules even when it comes to hair. Get yourself on a weekly hair schedule by deciding what days are wash days and how you will style your hair each day. For me, day 1 and 2 hair is down and curled with a wand. Day 3 hair could be a braid. Day 4 hair a low bun. Day 5 hair is always the top knot! Then I wash, dry and repeat.

As for color and styling tools, I will probably always use them but I try to choose a route that is less damaging. I’ve always colored my hair one way or another and I doubt that will stop as I age and more grays pop up :) I try not to highlight often and will typically do all over color one shade darker than my normal hair.

I use a curling wand on my hair a few times a week which can be damaging, especially to the ends of my hair, but the Dove Serum in Oil definitely helps with breakage.

I only trim my hair when my layers need touching up or I notice split ends that are too tempting for me not to pick! Trimming can make you feel better but it’s definitely a personal preference how often you trim. It’s a myth that trimming actually makes your hair grow faster though :)

So what is the final (or final for now) destination on my hair story journey? I keep my hair long, with long layers and I usually part it in the middle or to the right side. It stays a rich brown, about one shade darker than my natural color, with an ombre effect where it gets lighter toward the ends. Loose curls are my favorite style!

  1. I love all the old hair style photos! So much fun! I try to only wash my hair a couple times a week too. It makes such a difference!
