One Room Challenge, Week 5: Crunch Time

Hiya!!! It’s crunch time now for the One Room Challenge! As you know I am working on my new deck and we only have one week left until the BIG REVEAL!

Wow, I think I stopped breathing for a minute.

Make sure to check out all the ORC participants here and today’s linkups here!

When I started this challenge I totally thought 6 weeks was plenty of time to makeover a “room” but it has flown by. I’m praying that it all comes together in the next few days and that I don’t have to cut anything off my punch list.

If you missed any of the last four posts you can check them out here: Week 1, Week 2Week 3, Week 4

Just a reminder here is the plan I started with:

OB-ORC deck

So a lot of things happened this week but not in the order I had planned. The crazy weather we’re getting here in NC is confusing me and messing up my timetable but I tried to make up for it in other areas.

There were a couple major highlights this week, one being that I got my furniture! Woohoo! However, the staining is not quite finished yet so I haven’t put the furniture on the deck to get any pics. Stress!

We did get everything pressure washed thanks to my awesome dad and my little 2nd in command :)

I also finished my metal marquee anchor!!!! This is my favorite part of the whole makeover so I can’t spoil it yet but there will be a tutorial after the reveal. Sorry for the teaser :)

Since we’ve had crazy wind, rain and then a forecast for lots of storms {that never came} I spent time this week scoring some more fun accessories!

You can see the unstained deck :( Unfortunately I underestimated the time it would take to choose a stain color – never again will I make that mistake.

I was going for a weathered gray look and NONE of the samples (aka quarts) I bought were even close. Finally I went to a new store and a new brand and found one that worked. It’s Cabot’s Beechwood Gray but it cost a pretty penny :( I guess I’ll have to make some budget cuts elsewhere.

You can see the color here. This is actually a little darker than it will look on the entire floor. For some reason I caked it on and  I don’t want it that solid. I’m going to sand it just a bit to lighten it up and go easy on the rest.

Also, I’m staining the rails solid white and I have never painted anything so tedious. I’ve got the first coat done and I think it took me 8+ hours! Hopefully the second coat won’t be as bad and it will go on Friday and possibly the floor stain too. It WILL be finished Saturday if I have anything to do with it!!!

I did paint the door trim and awning {I’m sure this thing has a name but who knows what it is, don’t judge :) }

I finally decided on the light that will eventually be in the picture above but that still has to be installed!

Finally, I’ve got a few fun DIY’s in the works that I am crossing my fingers will be finished. I’ll be using some quart-sized paint cans, this tablecloth, and these $1 keys from Michaels for several little projects.

Here is the updated punch list:

1. Stain and pressure wash the deck.

2. Paint the awning and door trim and touch up the door.

3. Sell current table and chairs on craigslist and hunt for an awesome deal on furniture. {patio set is still listed}

4. Buy Tiki torches and mount them: from Home Depot.

5. Paint the chiminea and base.

6. Find/build two side tables: using nautical spool side table and a DIY stump table

7.  Find and hang arts and crafts style light fixture.

8. Purchase rug, outdoor pouf and pillows: Target.

9. Figure out grill placement.

10. Build or hunt for a vintage cooler/and or bar cart. {found a cooler at HomeGoods but holding out for a vintage one}

11. DIY upcycled marquee anchor.

12. Hang string lights: from Target.

13. Find pots/planters and decide on and buy plants.

14. Shop our home and thrift stores for styling accessories.

15. Throw a PARTAY!!! {this is my favorite part!}

I feel better after checking a few things off this huge list!

Okay y’all, that’s it for today! You’re going to have to wait until next week to see it all come together.

Then the most important thing happens…LET’ THE DECK PARTIES BEGIN!!!
