Top 5 Friday: Tips For A Fresh Home In The New Year
Happy Friday friends! Friday is pretty much my favorite day of the week and it just got a little bit better! As you heard me mention in my 2018 goals post I’m adding a new series to the blog called Top 5 Friday. It will consist of 5 helpful tips on a particular subject. There will of course be lots of home decorating tips but I’m planning on adding a few different topics like personal finances, organization, and more! Welcome to the first installment of Top 5 Friday!
The first Top 5 Friday is all about how to freshen up your home for the new year. I don’t know about you guys but the minute the holidays end and the new year hits I’m ready for a clean slate! I like to take decorations down, tidy up and let my house breathe for a minute…so here goes…
1. Let your house breath.
Get those decorations down and any other decor and knick knacks that you’ve been on the fence about. I actually recommend removing a lot of your existing decor and packing it in a box for a little while. It’s amazing what an empty(ier) house feels like and you can really decide what you miss and want to put back up or what you want to get rid of.
Â
2. Declutter, sell and donate.
Once you’ve let your house breath a little and have decided what will return to the walls and bookshelves, get rid of the rest. I suggest taking the time to sell what you can and then donate the rest. Sometimes I hate the process of selling things, especially if they are inexpensive items, but I find if I do a little bit adds up and I can put that money aside for when I want to buy something new. You know, a little home decor piggy bank of sorts!

3. Freshen up.
Do all those pesky things that you forgot to do during the holiday season like change your filters, dust the baseboards, etc. Splurge on a couple new candles for a change up from the holidays scents or a bouquet of fresh flowers.
4. Make small repairs.
Tackle a few of the small home items on your to-do list like patching holes, touching up paint, and replacing light bulbs that have been out a few weeks to long (I swear I NEVER to this lol!). If you do some of these things now your ‘spring cleaning’ might not feel so daunting!
5. Put it on paper.
Make realistic goals for any home projects you want to complete in the new year and assign dates to them. The keyword here (so I’ve learned) is realistic. Make sure that you will most likely be able to accomplish them otherwise you are just creating a world of frustration for yourself.
