Top 5 Friday: Our Favorite Easy Outdoor Plants

Happy Top 5 Friday friends! Today I’m sharing my top 5 favorite easy plants perfect for freshening up your outdoor spaces for spring and summer!

1. Hydrangea

Hands down my favorite plant/flower. Like most, I love them for their beauty and vibrant color but they also make a great gifts! You can even plant the grocery store potted versions directly into the ground and they do extremely well. I have a huge hydrangea plant in my yard that my mom bought me from our local grocery store years ago. This hydrangea is from our yard! They do not need full sun so make sure to pick a shady spot and plant that hydrangea your hubby gifts you for mother’s day. :)

2. Ferns

Now, ferns are not the longest lasting plant but with consistent watering and some shade these babies give a lot of southern charm to any porch or patio. I just love their fullness and the bright green color.

3. Roses

I love roses of all kinds primarily because they are hardy and low maintenance. I don’t think I’ve ever watered the rose bush in our backyard and it blooms year after year. Knockout Roses are perfect for general landscaping and I think every yard should have them! This pink beauty is from our backyard too!

4. Rosemary

This tough herb plays double duty in the decor and cooking departments. Great for pots or in ground, rosemary doesn’t need too much attention and it’s fragrance is to die for!

5. Trailing Vinca

This plant was a surprise to me and it quickly became one of my favorites. I grabbed it from the shelf at Lowe’s because I thought it was pretty and it ended up lasting all the way to the winter in full sun with only watering about once a week if that much.

BONUS: I wanted to take a quick minute to talk about Hostas. I think these low lying bushy plants are so awesome! We can’t keep them alive because we don’t have enough shade but I think they look great in all types of yards and I would have 100 of them if I could!

  1. Love hostas. In Michigan, our temps are not great for everything to grow. Hostas are pretty hearty. I will have to look into some of the others.
